CHIGASAKI STYLE**Bontrager Specter WaveCel Helmet
by: Naoki Sakai

Bontrager’s new Specter helmet uses WaveCel technology, a major advancement in the protection against cycling related head injuries.  It has been scientifically shown to be up to 48x more effective than traditional foam helmets in protecting head injury from certain accidents.

WaveCel is a collapsable cellular  structure that lines the inside of the helmet. It works like a crumple zone that absorbs the force of an impact before it reaches your head.

It works as a 3 way system. 1. Flex: the cells flex to reduce the initial frictional forces. 2. Crumple: Then, the cells crumple like a car bumper upon impact. 3. Glide: Finally, WaveCel glides to redirect energy away from the head.   Bontrager says it increases the weight of the helmet by an average of 53 grams, but well worth the higher protection from head trauma.
